WHY DLWTRAIL?

  • CLIMATE EMERGENCY
Leicestershire County Council is one of  over 250 local authorities across the UK which have declared a commitment to tackle Climate Emergency.
But what does "tackling climate emergency" actually look like?
We suggest that DLWTRAIL has its part to play at a very local, community level.

  • DLWTRAIL IS A BITE-SIZE CHUNK
    "
Transforming cycling and walking infrastructure" is part of LCC's strategy for tackling Climate Emergency.
    DLWTRAIL is aligned with that.
It's a local proposal from the local community which plays a small part in addressing a global challenge.

  • GETTING ACTIVE
Over half of all car journeys are less than 5 miles
(2017 National Travel Survey). For many people (as evidenced in our Dossier of Demand), driving between our two villages is something that's forced upon them by lack of appropriate local infrastructure. The bus service between the two villages stops early in the evening.
Our Dossier of Demand has also shown that there are parents in Diseworth whose children go to Long Whatton School, and vice versa. They want their children to be able to walk or cycle safely to school.
People WILL walk and cycle more if they believe it's safe!

  • HEALTH & WELLBEING
Active, human-powered travel is good for both individuals and the environment. It contributes to tackling preventable health issues like obesity, heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes and more. That, in turn, reduces pressure on the NHS. A healthier population saves money!

  • LINKING TO NATIONAL ACTIVE TRAVEL ROUTES
DLWTRAIL would give easier, safer access to the National Cycle Network and the Cross Britain Way.

  • A MORE COHESIVE  & PROSPEROUS PARISH
Long Whatton & Diseworth are divided by the nature of the road between our villages, not united by it. We need to avoid having pedestrians, cyclists and horse riders deterred from travelling between our villages by speeding traffic.
We need easier access to the amenities of each village.
Let's make it easier for Diseworth residents to walk or cycle to Long Whatton shop.

Visit the pubs in the other village. Share more social activities. Do more stuff together.
    R
    e-unite the parish!
